Biography
Paolo Barilla was born in Milan in 1961. He started racing in 1975 and won the Italian 100cc karting title in 1976. He contested Formula Fiat Abarth in 1980 and moved up to Formula 3 in 1981, where he won races and finished third in the Italian Championship. In 1982 he raced in Formula 2 with Minardi.
In 1985 he won the Le Mans 24 Hours in a Joest Racing Porsche 956 by a margin of three laps.
After testing for Minardi in 1989, he stood in for Pierluigi Martini at Suzuka and was then signed to drive for the team in 1990. That season he often failed to qualify, so his 14 entries produced just 8 starts. Gianni Morbidelli replaced him before the end of the season. In 2014 he won the Formula 3 class at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix in a Chevron B34.
