Biography
Mike Magill, whose full name was Charles Edward Magill, was born in 1920 in Haddonfield, New Jersey. After serving in the army during the Second World War, he raced in the AAA and USAC Championship Car series from 1955 to 1959, making 15 starts. His best result was fourth place at Langhorne in 1955.
His Formula One World Championship races came at the Indianapolis 500, which counted towards the drivers' championship from 1950 to 1960. Magill started the race in 1957 and 1958 in a Kurtis Kraft and in 1959 in a Sutton, and he scored no championship points. In 1958 he took over the car in which Juan Manuel Fangio had practised, as Fangio was unable to race. Magill was caught up in an accident on the opening lap, rejoined after more than an hour in the pits and finished 17th. In 1959 his race ended in a four-car accident. He died in Haddonfield in 2006.
