Biography
Mike MacDowel was born in Great Yarmouth in 1932 and raced as an English amateur. His only appearance in the Formula One World Championship was the French Grand Prix on 7 July 1957. He drove a Cooper that he shared with Jack Brabham. After qualifying 15th and last on the grid, the car finished seventh. Only the first five places scored points at the time, so he took no championship points.
After a break, MacDowel competed in hill climbs from 1968 and carried on well beyond his 60th birthday. In 1973 he set what was then the course record at Shelsley Walsh, covering the 1000 yard course in 28.21 seconds. He won the British Hill Climb Championship that year and again in the next. MacDowel died in 2016.
