Biography
Mike Harris was born in 1939 in Mufulira, in what was then Northern Rhodesia, and lived in Salisbury in the early 1960s. In 1962 he won the Rhodesian Championship in a Cooper T53 powered by an Alfa Romeo engine, and he finished third in the Rhodesian Grand Prix. He then travelled to South Africa, where he retired from the Rand Grand Prix with a puncture and went out in his heat at the Natal Grand Prix, missing the final.
His only round of the Formula One World Championship was the 1962 South African Grand Prix, which decided that season's title. Engine trouble hampered him repeatedly in practice, and he set the 15th fastest time. In the race he was running tenth when he retired on lap 32 of 82 with an engine bearing failure. Harris later withdrew from racing. He died in Durban in 2021, aged 82.
