Biography
Mauri Rose was born in Columbus, United States, on 26 May 1906. He won the AAA National Championship in 1936 and took three Indianapolis 500 victories, in 1941, 1947 and 1948, becoming the third driver to win the race three times. In 1941 he started from pole position, but his Maserati dropped out after sixty laps with spark plug trouble. He then took over the car of Floyd Davis and went on to win in it.
The Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula One World Championship from 1950 to 1960. Rose took part in two championship races, at Indianapolis in 1950 and 1951, both times in a Deidt car. He finished in the top three once and was ninth in the 1950 drivers' standings. His fifteenth and final Indianapolis 500 start came in 1951, when an accident ended his race after 126 laps.
Both during and after his racing career Rose worked for General Motors, where he helped develop the Chevrolet Corvette into a competitive racing car. In 1967 he drove the pace car at the Indianapolis 500. Among other honours, he was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1994. Rose died in 1981.
