Mário de Araújo Cabral, known as "Nicha", was born in Cedofeita, Portugal, on 15 January 1934 and died on 17 August 2020. He made his Formula One debut on 23 August 1959 at the Portuguese Grand Prix, held at Monsanto. Driving a Cooper, he finished tenth, four laps down, and so became the first Portuguese driver to start a Formula One race. He lined up again at the Portuguese Grand Prix in 1960, but retired.
Cabral never pursued a full-time racing career. In 1961 he drove for Scuderia Centro Sud at the Pau Grand Prix, after which National Service interrupted his racing. He returned to Formula One with Centro Sud in 1963, retiring from the German Grand Prix and failing to qualify at Monza. His final world championship race was the 1964 Italian Grand Prix in a Derrington-Francis-ATS, which he also did not finish. From five entries and four starts he scored no championship points. After an accident in the 1965 Formula Two race at Rouen he was absent until 1968, then raced sportscars and occasionally Formula Two before retiring in 1975.
