Biography
Marco Apicella was born on 7 October 1965 and began racing in Formula Three in 1984. He contested International Formula 3000 from 1987 to 1991, finishing fourth overall with FIRST in 1989 and fifth with Paul Stewart Racing in 1991, although he never won a race in the series. In 1992 he moved to Japanese Formula 3000 with the Dome team and won a round there in the same year.
He was given a Jordan drive at the 1993 Italian Grand Prix. He qualified 23rd, but his race ended on the first lap when he was caught up in a multi-car collision at the first corner. It remained his only Grand Prix, as Emanuele Naspetti replaced him at the next race in Portugal. In 1994 Apicella won the Japanese Formula 3000 title with Dome. He later took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, among other events. His start at Le Mans in 2009 and one Super GT start in the same year marked the end of his professional career.
