Biography

Luiz Razia was born on 4 April 1989 in Barreiras, Brazil. He began his single-seater career in 2005 in South American Formula 3, finishing sixth with Dragão Motorsport and winning two races. In 2006 he took the title in that series with seven wins, ahead of Mario Moraes and Diego Nunes. He moved to Europe in 2007 to race in Euroseries 3000 and finished third overall. In 2008 he was fourth in the Italian standings and won a race at Misano.

In GP2 Asia he drove for Arden in 2008-09 and took his first win in the final round in Bahrain. In 2009 he entered the main GP2 Series with Fisichella Motor Sport and won a race there for the first time, from pole position. In 2010 he finished eleventh in the standings with Rapax, who won the teams' title, while his team-mate Pastor Maldonado became champion. In 2011 he drove for AirAsia, took a pole position at the Hungaroring and finished twelfth. In 2012, with Arden, he won races in Malaysia, Catalunya, Valencia and Silverstone and ended the year as runner-up to Davide Valsecchi.

In Formula One, Razia was a test driver for Virgin in 2010 and drove in the Young Drivers' Test at the end of the year. In 2011 he was reserve and test driver for Lotus, took part in first practice at the Chinese Grand Prix and again drove in the Young Driver test. His planned debut for Marussia at the 2013 Australian Grand Prix did not happen, and Jules Bianchi took the seat instead, so he never started a Grand Prix. In 2014 he raced in Indy Lights for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, winning once, finishing on the podium five times and ending the season fifth. In 2015 he was a guest driver in the opening round of Stock Car Brasil and later drove a Toyota Corolla for Bassani in the Brasileiro de Marcas.
