Biography
Leslie Marr was born in Durham in 1922 and is known chiefly as a landscape painter. After the Second World War, during which he served as a technician in the Royal Air Force, he turned to painting and studied under David Bomberg. When the Borough Group broke up in 1950, he kept travelling around Britain and the continent, and during these years he also dabbled in motor racing.
He made his World Championship debut at the British Grand Prix on 17 July 1954, driving a privately entered Connaught, and finished 13th. He started again in 1955, but his race ended in a spin caused by a damaged brake pipe. That made two World Championship starts in all. In non-Championship events he won the 1955 Cornwall MRC Formula 1 Race and finished fourth in the 1956 New Zealand Grand Prix. Marr died in 2021 at the age of 98.
