Biography
Larry Crockett, whose full name was Larret Julian Crockett, was born on 23 October 1926 in Cambridge City, Indiana. He raced in the American Championship Car series and was nicknamed "Crash" because of his frequent racing mishaps. In 1954 he made ten starts in that championship, with a best result of fourth in the Pikes Peak hillclimb, and finished eleventh in the points standings.
That year he also qualified for the Indianapolis 500 for the first time. The race counted towards the Formula One World Championship from 1950 to 1960, which makes his drive in a Kurtis Kraft his only World Championship start. He finished ninth and was named Rookie of the Year. In March 1955, aged 28, Crockett was killed in a racing accident at Langhorne Speedway in Pennsylvania.
