Kurt
Kuhnke
Biography
Kurt Kuhnke was born in Stettin on 30 April 1910. He raced motorcycles in the late 1940s before turning to car racing. Through the 1950s he regularly competed in a Formula Three Cooper 500, taking a number of wins, and he also took part in a few Formula Junior and Formula Two races.
In Formula One he ran a Borgward-engined Lotus, known as the BKL Lotus (Borgward Kuhnke Lotus), which was a standard Lotus only lightly modified by him. His only World Championship entry was the 1963 German Grand Prix, where he missed qualifying by a wide margin, so he never started a championship race. In 1964 he entered two BKL Lotus cars at the Solitude Grand Prix for Ernst Maring and Joachim Diel, and Maring finished tenth. Kuhnke died on 8 February 1969.
