Kevin
Cogan
Biography
Kevin Cogan was born on 31 March 1956 in Culver City, California. The American was entered for two Formula One Grands Prix: the 1980 Canadian Grand Prix with Williams and the 1981 United States Grand Prix West with Tyrrell. On both occasions he failed to qualify, so he never started a World Championship race.
He then raced in American Indy car racing. At the 1981 Indianapolis 500 he started 12th and finished fourth, although the rookie award went to Josele Garza. In the CART race at Milwaukee in 1981 he came second. In 1982 he drove for Team Penske, finished third in the season opener at Phoenix, took two pole positions and ended the CART championship sixth. At that year's Indianapolis 500 he lined up in the middle of the front row, next to pole-sitter Rick Mears. A crash happened right at the start, involving Cogan and Mario Andretti.
In 1983 he finished fifth at Indianapolis for Bignotti-Cotter. In 1986, driving for Patrick Racing, he won the season opener at Phoenix, his only victory in Indy car racing. At the Indianapolis 500 he led late on, was passed by Bobby Rahal after a restart and finished second. As in 1982, he ended the championship sixth, his best overall result. After a crash at the 1991 Indianapolis 500 he missed the rest of that season and all of 1992. In 1993 he drove a part-time programme with Galles-Kraco and then ended his career.
