Biography
The British racing driver Ken Downing was born in Chesterton in 1917. In the late 1940s he took up racing as a privateer. In 1952 he made the step to single-seaters in a Connaught A-Type. He won the Madgwick Cup at Goodwood and took second place in the Grand Prix des Frontières at Chimay, where he lost the lead only a few metres from the finish.
In the Formula One World Championship he started two races for Connaught in 1952. He finished ninth in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, having been running fourth at one stage before a spin as he went round a backmarker. In the Dutch Grand Prix his race ended with an oil pressure problem. For 1953 he moved to an Aston Martin DB3 and retired from racing shortly afterwards. He died in 2004.
