Biography
Johnny Boyd was born in Fresno, California, on 19 August 1926. Between 1954 and 1966 he raced in the AAA and USAC Championship Car series, making 56 starts. His best result in those series was second place at Milwaukee in 1959.
The Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula One World Championship from 1950 to 1960. All six of Boyd's World Championship starts, from 1955 to 1960, came in that race, so he was purely an Indy 500 driver in the World Championship. He qualified for the event for the first time in 1955 and finished 29th, having been caught up in the crash in which Bill Vukovich was killed. In 1958 he led 18 laps and finished third, his only podium, which left him 16th in the championship. He drove a Kurtis Kraft from 1955 to 1958 and an Epperly in 1959 and 1960.
Boyd failed to qualify for both the Indianapolis 500 and the Milwaukee race in 1967 and retired from driving after that. He died in Fresno in 2003. He was inducted into the Fresno County Athletic Hall of Fame in 1966 and the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 2010.
