Biography
Johnnie Tolan was born in Victor in 1917. The American driver won several championships. In 1946 he won 45 midget races and the Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association championship. He took that title again in 1947, this time with 47 wins. He won the AAA Midwest championship in 1950, and in 1952 came his first National Midget championship along with a Midwest title. In 1953 he won the midget race held on the night before the Indianapolis 500.
In the Formula 1 World Championship, Tolan only raced in the Indianapolis 500, which counted towards the drivers' championship from 1950 to 1960. He started there in a Kurtis Kraft in 1956 and in a Kuzma in 1957 and 1958. He scored no points, and his best result was thirteenth place in 1958. In 1964 he travelled to Australia with Bob Tattersall and Jimmy Davies, where injuries in Sydney ended his career. Tolan died in Redondo Beach, California, in 1986. He was inducted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1988.
