Biography
John Nicholson was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on 6 October 1941. He won the British Formula Atlantic championship in 1973 and 1974 in a Lyncar. Away from the track he worked as an engine builder, including for McLaren.
He entered the British Grand Prix with a Lyncar in 1974 and 1975. In 1974 he did not start, but in 1975 he qualified and was classified 17th, five laps down, even though he crashed in the storm late in the race. It was his only World Championship start and he scored no points. His engine-building business meant he could not commit to a full season, so most of his Formula One entries were for races outside the championship. In 1976 he raced in Formula Two and Formula 5000, and in January 1977 he competed in New Zealand. After his racing career ended, he turned to powerboat racing.
