Biography
John Cordts was born in Hamburg in 1935 and moved with his family to Sweden at the age of two. In his early twenties he emigrated to Canada, and he raced as a Canadian driver.
His only start in the Formula One World Championship came at the Canadian Grand Prix on 20 September 1969. Driving a Brabham, he qualified 19th and retired after ten laps with an oil leak, running 16th at the time.
Outside Formula One, Cordts raced mainly in sports car events in Canada and the United States, often in McLarens run by Dave Billes's Performance Engineering team. He competed in the Can-Am series until 1974, mostly in McLarens and Lolas, and his best result there was second place at Road America in 1974. In the Trans-Am series he drove, for a time, a Pontiac Firebird known as the "Tirebird", and in FIA events he raced for the Greenwood Corvette team. He was inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 2003.
