Biography
The British driver John Barber was born in Little Marlow in 1929. He first raced a Cooper-JAP and then moved to a Formula Two Cooper-Bristol, which he raced in 1952. Towards the end of that season he crashed the car heavily.
At the start of 1953 he travelled to Argentina and took part in the Grand Prix there, a round of the Formula One World Championship, in a works Cooper T23. He finished eighth, seven laps down. It was his only World Championship start. He also took part in a Formula Libre race in Buenos Aires, where he came twelfth.
Back in England he raced a Golding-Cooper. In the British Empire Trophy on the Isle of Man he was involved in an accident in which another driver, James Neilson, lost his life. Barber sold the car soon afterwards. His next race was in 1955, in a Jaguar C-type. He died in 2015.
