Biography
Joe Kelly was born in Dublin in 1913 and raced in Ireland and Britain. In 1949 he took part in the BRDC International Trophy meeting at Silverstone in a Maserati 6CM.
In the Formula One World Championship he entered the British Grand Prix in 1950 and 1951, both times in his own Alta GP, the last car of that type to be built. He was not classified in either race, and his best grid position was 18th. In 1952 he finished third in the Ulster Trophy at Dundrod. His Alta was later converted to take a Bristol engine and became the Irish Racing Automobile. At the Curragh in Ireland he broke the lap record in a Maserati, and in 1954 he lowered it again by a wide margin in a Ferrari sports car.
An accident at Oulton Park in 1955 brought his full-time racing career to an end. Later in life he still took part in hill climbs at Wicklow. Kelly died in Neston, England, in 1993.
