Jo Vonlanthen, whose full name is Joseph Vonlanthen, was born in St. Ursen, Switzerland, on 31 May 1942. He began in Formula Vee and then moved up to Formula Three, where he won the Swiss Formula 3 Championship. Formula Two proved harder going for him.
In 1975 he found a place with Frank Williams Racing Cars. He finished 14th in the Swiss Grand Prix, a non-championship race. His only World Championship round was the Austrian Grand Prix on 17 August 1975. He got onto the grid because Wilson Fittipaldi was unable to start, and he retired with an engine failure, without scoring a point. He then went back to Formula Two and later dropped out of the sport's higher levels.
