Biography
Jim Crawford was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, in 1948. He first competed in rallies, driving a Mini. After an unsuccessful spell in Formula Ford, he raced in Formula Atlantic for the team of his friend Stephen Choularton and spent several years driving alongside him at SDC Racing. Lotus Cars took notice of him and offered him a test drive.
In 1975 Crawford started two Formula One World Championship races for Lotus, making his debut on 19 July. He was the 500th person to start a World Championship race. In 1982 he won the British Formula One Championship.
In the early 1980s he moved to the United States and finished runner-up twice in the Can-Am series. He took fourth place on his CART debut at Long Beach in 1984 and went on to become a regular at the Indianapolis 500. He crashed there in practice in 1987, but returned in 1988, led for eight laps and finished sixth, his best result at Indianapolis. He made his last start in the race in 1993 and failed to qualify in 1994 and 1995. Crawford died in 2002.
