Biography

Jerry Unser Jr. was born in Colorado Springs on 15 November 1932. The American won the 1957 USAC Stock Car championship. He was the first member of the Unser racing family to compete at Indianapolis, and his brothers Al and Bobby and his nephew Al Jr. have all won the Indy 500.

The Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula One World Championship from 1950 to 1960. Unser took part in 1958 in a Kurtis Kraft, his only World Championship race, and scored no points. On the opening lap he was caught up in a 13-car pile-up and went over the wall at turn three. He crashed in practice for the 1959 Indy 500 on 2 May and died on 17 May. Fire-resistant race suits became compulsory for drivers afterwards.
