Biography
Jerry Hoyt, whose full name was Gerald Frederick Hoyt, was born in Chicago on 29 January 1929. He raced mainly in the American National Championship. The Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula One World Championship from 1950 to 1960, so his four starts in that race, in 1950, 1953, 1954 and 1955, appear in the World Championship records. He did not score any points.
In 1955 he put his Stevens on pole position at Indianapolis, but an oil leak forced him out of the race after 40 laps. In none of his four races at the Speedway did he get beyond 130 of the 200 laps. In July 1955 Hoyt was killed in a sprint car race in Oklahoma City.
