Biography

Jaime Alguersuari was born in Barcelona on 23 March 1990, the son of motorcycle racer Jaime Alguersuari Sr. He started in the Italian Formula 1600 Junior Series in 2005, won the Italian Formula Renault Winter Series in 2006 and finished runner-up in the Italian Formula Renault championship in 2007. In 2008 he won the British Formula 3 title with Carlin, and at 18 years and 203 days he was the youngest champion in the series' history. In 2009 he raced in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series.

Toro Rosso gave him Sébastien Bourdais's seat for the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix. At 19 years and 125 days he was the youngest driver to have started a Formula 1 race up to that point, and the first person born in the 1990s to do so. The record was broken by Max Verstappen in 2015. Alguersuari finished 15th in Hungary, and his best result of the year was 14th in Brazil. He ended the season 24th in the championship. A week after his debut he won his first race in Formula Renault 3.5 at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.

He stayed with Toro Rosso for 2010 and scored his first world championship points with ninth place in Malaysia. A tenth place at his home race and another points finish in the season finale in Abu Dhabi followed, and he ended the year 19th. In 2011 he took eighth in Canada and at the European Grand Prix, seventh in Italy and South Korea, and eighth in India. He started sixth in Belgium. He finished 14th in the standings. For 2012 the team chose Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Éric Vergne instead. In 2012 he worked as an expert summariser for BBC Radio 5 Live.

Alguersuari drove for Virgin in Formula E in 2014 and 2015. His best finish was fourth in Buenos Aires in 2015, and he was 13th in the standings with 30 points. On 1 October 2015 he officially announced his retirement from motorsport. He returned to karting in 2021 and won a round of the Spanish championship at Zuera. He also works as a DJ under the name Squire, and his debut album Organic Life came out in 2011.
