Biography
Jackie Lewis was born on 1 November 1936 in Stroud, Gloucestershire, and began racing in 1958 in Formula Three with a Cooper-Norton. The following year he won his first Formula Two race at Montlhéry in a Cooper-Climax, and in 1960 he took the Formula Two title.
He moved up to Formula One in 1961 with a Cooper T53 that he bought himself, making his debut at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa in June. He started five races that season, finished fourth in Italy and ended the world championship in 13th place. In 1962 he set up his own team, Ecurie Galloise. The BRM V8 he acquired proved unsatisfactory and was returned to the factory, so he went back to his Cooper. He finished seventh in the Dutch Grand Prix. In all he made nine World Championship starts, and by 1963 he had withdrawn from racing.
