Biography
Ignazio Giunti was born in Rome on 30 August 1941. The Italian driver raced saloon cars and sports cars as well as competing in Formula One. In 1968, driving for Alfa Romeo, he finished second in the Targa Florio and, sharing a car with Nanni Galli, took fourth place in the Le Mans 24 Hours. Ferrari signed him in 1970 mainly for its sports-car team, and he won the 12 Hours of Sebring with them. That earned him a Formula One opportunity alongside Clay Regazzoni. On his debut, the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa, he finished fourth. He started four races for Ferrari that year and ended the world championship in 17th place. Ferrari re-signed him for 1971.
Giunti died on 10 January 1971 in the Buenos Aires 1000 km, his first race of the year. He was leading when his Ferrari 312PB ran into the Matra of Jean-Pierre Beltoise, which was being pushed along the track after running out of fuel.
