Biography
Ian Scheckter was born in East London, South Africa, in 1947. He is the elder brother of 1979 world champion Jody Scheckter and the uncle of IRL driver Tomas Scheckter. In South African national racing he won 49 races and six championships across two spells as a full-time competitor.
He made his Formula One debut at the 1974 South African Grand Prix in a Lotus 72. In 1975 he raced for Williams and Tyrrell, and in 1976 for Tyrrell. His final season was 1977 with the March works team. He made 18 starts in total without scoring a championship point. Before the 1977 Japanese Grand Prix he was detained and expelled from Japan, partly because he held only a tourist visa, and so did not take part.
