Biography
Horace Gould was born Horace Harry Twigg in Bristol on 20 September 1921. He began racing sports cars in 1952 in a Cooper-MG. In 1954 he moved up to Formula One as a privateer, entering under the team name Gould's Garage (Bristol). He made his World Championship debut on 17 July 1954 in a Cooper. From 1955 to 1958 he started races with Maserati, and in 1960 he had one further entry without a start. In all he made 14 starts from 18 entries.
He finished fifth in the 1956 British Grand Prix. The two points from that race left him sharing 19th place in the World Championship. Away from the championship he won Formula One races at Castle Combe in 1954 and Aintree in 1956. In 1957 he finished fifth in the Nürburgring 1000 km, sharing a Maserati 300S with Stirling Moss, Juan Manuel Fangio and Chico Godia. He spent periods living and racing in New Zealand and in Modena. Gould died in Bristol on 4 November 1968. His son Martin raced in Formula 3.
