Biography
Helmuth Koinigg was born in Vienna in 1948. His first racing car was a Mini Cooper that he bought from Niki Lauda. He raced touring cars, Formula Vee and Formula Ford, and then spent a period in sports car racing.
He reached Formula One in 1974. Scuderia Finotto entered him in a Brabham at the Austrian Grand Prix, his home race, but he failed to qualify. He then joined Surtees for the last two races of the season, starting in Canada and the United States. At the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen on 6 October 1974, a suspension failure sent his car off the track and into the barrier. He died at the age of 25, having made two World Championship starts.
