Biography
Hap Sharp, whose full name was James Sharp, was born in Tulsa in the United States in 1928. He took part in six Formula One World Championship races between 1961 and 1964, driving a Cooper in 1961 and 1962, a Lotus in 1963 and a Brabham in 1964.
Alongside this he raced sports cars. In 1962 he and Jim Hall founded Chaparral Cars, Inc., building their cars in Midland, Texas, including the mid-engined Chaparral 2. Hall and Sharp won the Road America 500 in the year the company was formed, and they won together again at Sebring in 1965. Sharp gave up driving after the 1965 season, with two exceptions: he drove the Chaparral 2E in the 1966 Nassau Trophy race and stood in for Mike Spence in the Chaparral 2F at the 1967 Targa Florio. He died in 1993.
