Biography
Graham McRae was born in Wellington in 1940. A qualified engineer, he took part in local sports car races and hillclimbs in the early 1960s and later built his own car for the National Formula. A scholarship for New Zealand drivers took him to Europe in 1969 for a few Formula 2 races.
He won several titles in Formula 5000. He won the Tasman Series in 1971, 1972 and 1973, and took the 1972 championship in the United States with three race wins. In the European championship he finished third in 1972. In 1978 he won the Australian Drivers' Championship, his fifth title in the category.
He started only one World Championship Formula One race, the 1973 British Grand Prix, driving an Iso-Marlboro for Frank Williams' team. He retired on the first lap. That same year he finished 16th in the Indianapolis 500 and was named Rookie of the Year. Away from the cockpit he built cars under the McRae name. He died in 2021 at the age of 81.
