Biography
Giorgio Scarlatti was born in Rome on 2 October 1921. His interest in racing developed immediately after the Second World War, and his first outings came in a Maserati A6. In 1955 he took part in the Naples Grand Prix in a Ferrari 500 F2 and finished fourth. His performances caught the eye of Maserati, who signed him for 1957.
Scarlatti made his World Championship debut on 13 May 1956 with Ferrari. Between 1956 and 1961 he was entered in 15 championship races and started 12 of them. He drove for Maserati, for Cooper in 1959 and 1960 as well, and finally for De Tomaso in 1961. His best championship position was 20th, in 1957. At the Pescara Grand Prix he narrowly missed out on the points when Stuart Lewis-Evans passed his Maserati 250F in the closing stages. At the Italian Grand Prix he finished fifth, sharing the car with Harry Schell.
Scarlatti also raced sports cars. In 1957 he shared a Maserati with Joakim Bonnier at Le Mans, and the pair retired after seven hours with a clutch problem. In 1958 he finished second in the Targa Florio with Jean Behra in a Porsche 718. In 1961 he won the 4 Hours of Pescara with Lorenzo Bandini in a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa. Scarlatti died on 26 July 1990.
