Gianfranco
Brancatelli
Biography
Gianfranco Brancatelli was born in Turin on 18 January 1950. He began racing in 1973 in Formula Abarth and moved up to Italian Formula 3 in 1975. In 1979 he was entered in three Formula One Grands Prix, two with Kauhsen and one with Merzario. He failed to qualify twice and to pre-qualify once, so he never took part in a race.
After leaving Formula One, Brancatelli raced in a number of touring car series. In 1985 he and Thomas Lindström won the European Touring Car Championship in a Volvo 240T run by Eggenberger Motorsport. In 1988 he took the Italian Touring Car Championship in an Alfa Romeo 75. In 1989 he won the Spa 24 Hours with Bernd Schneider and Win Percy, and finished second at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Sauber C9 alongside Mauro Baldi and Kenny Acheson. He kept racing until the late 1990s.
