Biography
Gerry Ashmore, born in West Bromwich in 1936, came from a racing family: his father Joe and his uncle Fred were both racing drivers. In 1960 he began his career in Formula Junior alongside his brother Chris. That year he also raced at Zeltweg and Innsbruck, finishing third behind Hans Herrmann and Wolfgang von Trips.
In 1961 he moved up to Formula One with a privately run Lotus 18. At the Naples Grand Prix he took pole position and finished second. In the World Championship he made three starts that season, including the British Grand Prix, where he retired after a few laps. He was entered once more with Lotus in 1962, but failed to qualify at Monza. He never scored a championship point.
