Biography
George Fonder was born on 22 June 1917 in Elmhurst, Pennsylvania, and raced in American Championship Car events. He made four starts in that series, with his best result coming at Langhorne Speedway in October 1949.
The Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula One World Championship from 1950 to 1960, and Fonder's two World Championship races were both this event: in 1952 with a Sherman and in 1954 with cars from Kurtis Kraft and Schroeder. He scored no points. In 1954 he drove as a relief driver for two different teams after failing to qualify his own car. He died on 14 June 1958 in Hatfield, Pennsylvania, in an accident during a midget car race.
