Biography
George Amick was born in Vernonia in the United States in 1924. He started out in jalopies in the north-west of the country before moving on to midget car racing. Across three seasons of USAC National midgets he finished in the top ten of the points standings every year and won 16 feature races. He took 38 wins in total, including the 1957 Turkey Night Grand Prix. He then moved up to Indy cars, competing mainly in the American National Championship.
His only World Championship start was the 1958 Indianapolis 500, a race that counted towards the Formula One World Championship from 1950 to 1960. Driving an Epperly roadster, he ran second behind Jimmy Bryan with 20 laps to go and finished second. That gave him a podium, 15th place in the championship and the race's Rookie of the Year award. Amick was killed on 4 April 1959 in a crash on the final lap of a USAC race at Daytona. He was inducted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 2009.
