Biography
The British driver Geoffrey Crossley was born in Baslow on 11 May 1921. He had been racing as an amateur since shortly before the Second World War and carried on afterwards with a pre-war Alta. In 1949 he acquired an Alta GP car, and late that year he used it to set standing-start records at Montlhéry in International Class F (1,100 to 1,500 cc).
In the very first round of the Formula One World Championship, the 1950 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, he qualified 17th and retired on lap 43 with a transmission failure. At the 1950 Belgian Grand Prix he qualified 12th and finished ninth. These were his only two World Championship starts, both in an Alta, and he scored no points. At the end of 1950 he withdrew from racing. In 1955 he built the Berkshire Special, but he withdrew it at Goodwood after practice and then left motor racing for good. Crossley died on 7 January 2002.
