Biography
Frederick Kesner Gamble was born in Pittsburgh on 17 March 1932. After the Second World War his family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he came into contact with sports cars. He finished his first national race, in May 1958, in second place in his class.
He helped build the American Camoradi team, which took Maserati, Porsche and Corvette cars to Europe in 1960. Gamble lived in Modena during that time. At Le Mans in 1960 he shared a Corvette with Lee Lilley.
His only Formula One race came at Monza on 4 September 1960. With British teams boycotting the event, Formula Two cars were allowed to enter, and Gamble started in his team's Behra-Porsche. He deliberately paced himself and ran eighth at one point, until the car ran out of fuel. He fetched a can of petrol and took the flag in tenth place. He scored no championship points.
In 1961 he contested part of the national SCCA season and ended the year third in the points. Gamble died in Honolulu on 30 March 2024, aged 92.
