Biography
Erwin Erich Bauer was born in Stuttgart on 17 July 1912. In April 1953 he shared a Porsche 356 Super 1500 with Hans Herrmann at the Mille Miglia, and the pair finished 30th. Later that year he took part in his only round of the Formula One World Championship, the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, driving a privately entered Veritas. He qualified 33rd and reached the second lap before his engine failed. In 1954 he finished fourth in a Lotus at the 1000 km Nürburgring.
Bauer died on 3 June 1958 at the Nürburgring. He was driving a 2-litre sports Ferrari and had not noticed that he had taken the chequered flag. He carried on at racing speed and crashed fatally on the lap that was meant for slowing down.
