Biography
Ernst Loof was born in Neindorf on 4 July 1907 and worked as both an engineer and a racing driver. Before the Second World War he raced motorcycles and had numerous successes for Imperia and BMW. In the late 1930s he contributed to the design of the BMW 328 sports car. He later became one of the founders of Veritas, a company that was successful in Formula Two with the Meteor in the immediate post-war period and also built sports cars.
Loof made his only World Championship start at the German Grand Prix on 2 August 1953. He drove a Veritas that he had designed as the company's head designer, and he retired after just two metres with a fuel pump failure. By then Veritas had gone bankrupt and BMW had bought its assets. Loof worked for BMW in styling and body engineering. He died on 3 March 1956.
