Biography
Eddie Johnson was born on 10 February 1919 in Richmond, Virginia, and grew up in Los Angeles. He raced in the AAA and USAC championship car series. His best finish in those series was third place at Trenton in 1959.
From 1952 to 1960 he made one World Championship start every year, each in the Indianapolis 500, which counted towards the Formula One drivers' championship in those years. He drove cars built by Trevis, Kurtis Kraft, Pawl and Kuzma, and finished 24th in the 1960 standings. Late in his career he often arrived at Indianapolis without a ride and was taken on by teams in need of a driver. In 1965 he finished tenth there. Johnson died on 30 June 1974 in a plane crash near Cleveland.
