Biography
Don Freeland was born in Los Angeles in 1925 and served in the US Navy as a mechanic during the Second World War. He started racing after the war and competed in the AAA and USAC Championship Car series from 1952 to 1962, making 76 starts.
The Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula One World Championship from 1950 to 1960, and Freeland started it every year from 1953 to 1960, giving him eight World Championship races. In 1955 he was on course for second place until a transmission failure ended his race 22 laps from the finish. In 1956 he came third, his only podium, and ended the championship in 12th place. He also finished in the top ten at Indianapolis in 1954 and 1958. He died in San Diego in 2007, aged 82.
