Biography
Don Edmunds was born in Santa Ana, California, on 23 September 1930. He was a racing driver and car builder. His only World Championship race was the 1957 Indianapolis 500, which counted towards the Formula One Drivers' Championship from 1950 to 1960. He started it in a Kurtis Kraft, finished nineteenth and was named the race's Rookie of the Year. A serious practice accident at Indianapolis in 1958 brought his time at the Speedway to an end.
Edmunds founded Autoresearch in Anaheim, a company that built midget and sprint cars. Chassis from his workshop won several National Midget Championships in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and in the 1970s he also built Formula Super Vee cars. He was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1991 and the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1994. Don Edmunds died in Gold Beach, Oregon, on 11 August 2020.
