Biography
Don Branson was born on 2 June 1920 in Rantoul, Illinois. He raced in the American USAC Championship Car series and also in sprint cars. Between 1956 and 1966 he made 128 starts in championship cars, finishing in the top ten 85 times and winning seven races. He was also USAC Sprint Car champion in 1959 and 1964.
From 1950 to 1960 the Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula One World Championship, and it was the only place Branson appeared in the category. He continued to contest the Indianapolis 500 until 1966.
Branson died on 12 November 1966 after a crash in a sprint car race at Ascot Park in Gardena, California. He was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1994 and the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 2012.
