Biography
Dieter Quester was born in Vienna on 30 May 1939 and started out in motorboat racing in the 1950s. He later drove for the BMW Formula 2 team. He was entered for the 1969 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, but his team-mate Gerhard Mitter was killed in practice. BMW then withdrew Quester and Hubert Hahne from the race.
Quester's only Formula One start came at his home race, the 1974 Austrian Grand Prix, driving for Surtees. He finished ninth and scored no points. He then returned to the European Touring Car Championship, driving a Schnitzer BMW 3.0 CSL. He had already won the 1973 Spa 24 Hours. In 2006 and 2007 he won the 24 Hours of Dubai, as well as the 24 Hours of Silverstone. His final race was in Daytona in November 2018, at the age of 79.
