In 2006 he contested three Le Mans Series rounds in the LMP2 class for Barazi-Epsilon and finished on the podium in each of them.
He entered GP2 in 2008 with Durango and won the sprint race at Monza that year, his first victory in the category. In August 2009 he replaced Romain Grosjean, who was on the verge of moving up to Formula One, at Barwa Addax and ended the season 17th. In the 2009-10 GP2 Asia Series he won the title for iSport International with three races to spare. He moved to DAMS for 2012. He won three of the four races held in Bahrain, later also won at his home round in Monza, and took the championship with 247 points to Luiz Razia's 222.
In Formula One he tested for Hispania at the young drivers' test in Abu Dhabi in November 2010. In 2011 he became a test driver for Team Lotus and drove the morning session of Friday practice at the Malaysian Grand Prix in place of Heikki Kovalainen. In 2013 he was test and reserve driver for the Lotus F1 Team. When Kimi Räikkönen missed the last two races, the seat went to Kovalainen. Valsecchi never started a Formula One race.
