Biography
David Murray was born in Edinburgh on 28 December 1909 and was a Scottish racing driver. He raced an ERA and later a Maserati 4CLT in events in Britain and across Europe, and also took part in rallies and hill climbs. He made his Formula One debut on 13 May 1950. Up to 1952 he was entered in five World Championship races and started four of them: in a Maserati in 1950 and 1951, and in a Cooper for Ecurie Ecosse in 1952. He never finished on the podium.
In 1952 he founded the Scottish team Ecurie Ecosse, based in Edinburgh. After his final Championship race he stopped driving to concentrate on running the team. Ecurie Ecosse won the Le Mans 24 Hours in both 1956 and 1957, each time with a Jaguar D-Type. Murray later moved abroad and was killed in a road accident in the Canary Islands on 5 April 1973.
