Biography
David Hampshire was born on 29 December 1917 in Mickleover, Derbyshire. In 1939 he took part in the Nuffield Trophy at Donington Park, where his Maserati 6CL retired after a few laps with a melted piston. After the Second World War he raced a Delage 158L and finished eighth in the 1946 Grand Prix des Nations. In 1948 he was second in the British Empire Trophy on the Isle of Man, and in 1949 he took fourth place in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in an ERA R12b.
In 1950 he started two Formula One World Championship races for Maserati. In non-championship events he put the Scuderia Ambrosiana Maserati 4CLT on pole position at the Jersey Road Race and set the fastest lap, but a magneto failure cost him a possible win. Later that season he won the Nottingham Trophy at Gamston in a Scuderia Ambrosiana Maserati 4CLT. In 1951 he shared an Aston Martin DB2 with Reg Parnell at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and finished seventh overall and third in class. Hampshire died on 25 August 1990 in Newton Solney.
