Biography
Danny Kladis, whose full name was Dan Peter Kladis, was born in Crystal City in the United States on 10 February 1917. He began racing in midget cars in 1935. After the Second World War he started the 1946 Indianapolis 500 for Andy Granatelli's team and finished 21st. He kept trying to qualify for the race up to the 1957 Indianapolis 500, but was often unsuccessful.
His only World Championship start came in 1954. The Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Drivers' World Championship from 1950 to 1960, and Kladis took part in a Bromme. He drove 50 laps as a relief driver for Spider Webb, and the shared car classified 30th. He scored no championship points.
In 2007 Kladis was inducted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame. He died on 26 April 2009, at which point he was the oldest living starter of the Indianapolis 500.
