Biography
Clemente Biondetti was born in Buddusò, Sardinia, in 1898. He began racing motorcycles in 1923 and switched to cars in 1927. By 1931 he was driving Grand Prix events for the Maserati factory team. He won the Mille Miglia in 1938 and, once racing resumed after the Second World War, took it three years running from 1947 to 1949. He also won the Targa Florio in 1948 and 1949. With four Mille Miglia victories, he won that race more often than any other driver.
Biondetti started just one Formula One World Championship race, the 1950 Italian Grand Prix. He drove a self-built Ferrari-Jaguar hybrid, but engine trouble put him out and he scored no championship points. He carried on in sports car and endurance racing and finished second in a Ferrari at the 1952 12 Hours of Pescara. Biondetti died in Florence in 1955.
